Stand Barefoot in the Grass
Happy Tranquility Thursday!
In 2023, my family moved from an apartment to a house a few miles further afield from Manhattan. One of the greatest gifts about this transition is that we now have a backyard where I can stand barefoot in the grass.
Spring has not yet fully sprung in New York, but the snow has melted so I am back at it with this ridiculously simple grounding technique. It is truly one of the best things you can do for your nervous system.
Stand in the grass barefoot for about five minutes. (See a video here.) That’s it. If you have access to a beach, this is also great to do in sand. Just be sure to put your phone away.
If you want to get fancy, watch your breath for those five minutes. Practice the physiological sigh (a scientifically backed strategy for anxiety reduction when done for five minutes a day). Or repeat (silently or aloud) the mantra, “Earth energy, ground me through my feet.”
Our constant busyness and use of electronics bring our energy up all day long. Grounding can help your sleep, your digestion, your stress response and a host of other issues.
Let me know how it goes! I’ll wager that if you do this daily for five minutes, you’ll notice a difference within a week.
Can’t get outside? Want to explore other grounding techniques? Here are some others I’ve shared:
The simplest: Pushing evenly through your feet.
Foot massage and my favorite foot exercises.
Each Monday I post a movement break to support your body, each Thursday an exercise or tip for your nervous system. I’m always happy to answer questions and open to your content requests.
