Release Hips + Hamstrings & Improve Balance
Greetings Overwhelmed Yogis,
I don’t know about you, but I am sure ready for the heavy, stagnant energy of winter to lift. This week I am sharing energizing exercises to invite in the lightness of spring.
The leg swings shown in this video will open your hamstrings and hips and improve your balance. They also take less than a minute.
Swing front and back 5-10 times, side to side 5-10 times, then switch legs.
Hold onto a wall or chair if you need to, but the momentum of swinging your arms can also help your balance. Improving your balance is one of the most important things you can do to prevent falls as you age.
Some balance tips:
🦶Be sure you are grounding through the four corners of the standing foot: mount of the big toe, inner heel, mound of the little toe and outer heel.
👀 Gaze at one still point in front of you. (Or, for an added balance challenge, look at the dog by your side. )
🛝 Have a playful attitude! Remember that wobbling is good because it means your balance is improving.
I’d love to know how this goes for you.
Each Monday I post a movement break to support your body, each Thursday an exercise or tip for your nervous system.
Coming for Tranquility Thursday: An energizing yet calming breathing exercise with scientific backing.
But remember the flip side of the energizing coin: You also need your rest.
If you are tired after springing ahead, I can’t recommend five minutes of legs up the wall highly enough. Also, here’s a 14-minute yoga nidra (guided relaxation) audio recorded by my mom that I bet will rejuvenate you better than any nap could.
